What Small Businesses Should Ask Before Hiring an AEO Agency

Thinking about hiring an Answer Engine Optimization agency? Learn the questions every small business should ask before investing in AI visibility services.

·6 min read

If you've been researching AI visibility or Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), you've probably noticed something.

Suddenly, everyone offers it.

As more people use ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI tools to discover businesses, companies are realizing that showing up in traditional search results is only part of the picture.

Naturally, agencies have started adding AEO to their list of services. Some have spent years studying how AI search works. Others simply added "AEO" to a service page because it's the newest marketing buzzword. From the outside, it can be difficult to tell the difference. That's exactly why we wrote this guide.

Whether you're hiring your first marketing partner or looking for someone to improve your AI visibility, these are the questions we'd ask before signing a contract.

Can you show me how you've improved AI visibility for a client?

Notice we didn't ask about rankings. We didn't ask about traffic. And we didn't ask about impressions. Those metrics still matter, but AI visibility is something different.

An experienced AEO agency should be able to explain how they monitor brand mentions, citations, and appearances within AI generated responses across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Those measurements go beyond traditional SEO reporting because they focus on how often your business becomes part of the answer, not just whether someone clicked on your website.

If the conversation stays focused entirely on keyword rankings or backlinks, you're probably talking to an SEO agency with a new label. That's not necessarily a bad thing. SEO and AEO work together. But it's worth understanding exactly what you're paying for.

How do you measure success?

This might be the most important question you ask. A good agency should have a clear answer for how they'll know their work is making a difference.

Some of the things they may track include:

  • Brand mentions across AI platforms
  • Citations within AI generated responses
  • Search visibility
  • Organic traffic
  • Qualified leads
  • Content engagement

You don't need a complicated dashboard to understand whether your marketing is working. In fact, we'd argue the opposite.

If someone can't explain their reporting in plain English, there's a good chance they're making the process more complicated than it needs to be.

Marketing should feel understandable, not overwhelming.

What does your AEO strategy actually include?

One of the biggest misconceptions about Answer Engine Optimization is that it's just writing blog posts. Content plays an important role, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

A complete strategy may include:

  • Structured data and schema markup
  • Technical website improvements
  • Better page organization
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Answer first content
  • Internal linking
  • Local business optimization
  • Building authority through trusted websites and brand mentions

Every agency has its own process, but they should be able to explain exactly what they're doing and why each piece matters.

If the explanation feels vague or full of marketing jargon, don't be afraid to ask follow up questions. A good partner should want you to understand the strategy.

Is your approach designed for businesses like mine?

Not every business needs an enterprise marketing strategy. Many well known AEO agencies primarily work with national brands or venture backed companies that have very different budgets and goals than a small business. That doesn't make them the wrong choice. It just doesn't automatically make them the right one.

Ask whether they've worked with businesses similar to yours.

Do they understand local search?

Can they prioritize the improvements that will have the biggest impact?

Will they recommend practical next steps instead of a long list of expensive projects?

The right strategy should fit your business, not the other way around. If you're curious how we approach this at Arta, our Answer Engine Optimization services are built specifically for small brands.

Who will actually be doing the work?

This question catches a lot of people by surprise. Sometimes the person leading the sales call isn't the person you'll work with once you become a client.

There's nothing wrong with having a team behind the scenes, but you deserve to know who's responsible for your strategy.

Who's reviewing your website?

Who's writing your content?

Who's implementing technical improvements?

Who's available when you have questions?

Transparency builds trust.

What happens after the first month?

AI search isn't standing still. Neither should your strategy.

Answer Engine Optimization isn't a one time checklist. AI platforms continue to evolve. Search behavior changes. New opportunities appear all the time.

Ask how the agency plans to adapt over time.

Will they continue monitoring your AI visibility?

Will they recommend improvements as search evolves?

Will they explain why those recommendations matter?

The best strategies grow alongside the technology.

Can you explain AEO without using marketing jargon?

This might be our favorite question.

If someone truly understands Answer Engine Optimization, they should be able to explain it in a way that makes sense to someone who doesn't work in marketing. You shouldn't leave a meeting feeling more confused than when it started.

The best marketers simplify complicated ideas. They don't make them sound more complicated.

At Arta, that's something we care deeply about. Small businesses shouldn't need a marketing dictionary just to understand how AI search works.

Three red flags to watch for

They guarantee AI citations or rankings.

No one controls what ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity chooses to cite. An agency can improve your chances of being referenced, but no one can honestly guarantee placement inside AI generated responses.

If someone promises guaranteed AI visibility, that's a reason to ask more questions.

Everything sounds automated.

Artificial intelligence is an incredible tool. We use it ourselves. But AI should support strategy, not replace it.

If an agency's entire process revolves around producing hundreds of AI generated articles with very little human oversight, ask how they're ensuring quality. The goal isn't to publish more content. The goal is to publish better content that actually helps people.

They can't explain why they're recommending something.

Every recommendation should have a purpose. If the explanation is simply, "It's best practice," don't be afraid to keep asking questions.

A good agency should connect every recommendation back to your business goals and explain how it supports your long term growth.

What to consider when asking all of these questions

At the end of the day, you're not just hiring someone to improve your AI visibility. You're hiring someone to help you make smart marketing decisions. That means finding a partner who's honest about what's proven, what's still evolving, and where there's still uncertainty.

AI search is changing quickly. Nobody has every answer. The agencies worth trusting aren't the ones pretending they've solved everything. They're the ones testing, learning, measuring, and sharing what they're discovering along the way.

Our perspective

At Arta, we're asking ourselves these same questions every day.

As we build our own AI visibility strategy, we're documenting what's working, what isn't, and what we're learning in real time. That's the purpose behind our ongoing AI visibility case study.

We believe small businesses deserve access to modern marketing strategies without enterprise pricing or unnecessary complexity. Answer Engine Optimization shouldn't feel intimidating, and understanding AI search shouldn't require a background in marketing.

Our goal has always been simple: help businesses prepare for the future of search, explain the process in a way that actually makes sense, and provide practical strategies that small businesses can confidently put into action.

Because when you understand why something works, you're in a much better position to decide what's worth investing in.
